First let me assure you, I love dogs. I am a dog person! I love dogs of all types. Big work dogs to teeny weeny little lap dogs. Furry, fluffy, slick, or no haired dogs are all fine with me. I enjoy going to the vet with my dog Noel just so I can see and play with other people’s dogs. I really can’t say I understand the love that people have for their dogs but our dogs are like our kids, they are part of our family. When we lose one we go through a grief process just like we do with people in our lives.
However, there is nothing that scares me more than when I walk up on a dog who stops and looks at me in not so friendly a way. It doesn’t matter that I am a true dog lover to that dog looking at me like I need a good chewing. I am afraid to move either way because this dog is not wanting to be my friend, he is just getting more and more aggressive and I don’t know why.
When someone asks me how to stop a dog from attacking my first thought is to pee yourself and run faster than the dog. I’ve never tried to outrun a dog but on the other count, let’s just say I know for a fact, that alone will have no effect on the situation at all. But there are questions all around about dog deterrent devices to stop a strange dog that appears to be aggressive.
Answers for those questions come from every corner and every life style. You hear everything from shooting the dog to lower your gaze and try not to trigger the attack instinct in the animal. I personally am somewhere in between those two extremes. I have looked into some alternative suggestions and these seem to be more to the middle of those suggestions. After all, just because your neighbor keeps their dog off leash you don’t want to live the rest of your life next to someone who hates you passionately.
So first off, I don’t want my response to an aggressive dog to be lethal. As I said earlier these dogs are someone’s people, and I don’t want to force anyone to grieve over the loss of someone they love. But at the same time, I don’t want to go home with more holes in me than I left home with. Dog bites hurt! I don’t, on the other hand, just want to rely on the strange dog’s graciousness to allow me to pass.
Then how do you get protection from a dog attack while walking? Many people will arm themselves with a stun gun or a pepper spray repellent. Others like the idea of a walking stick dog protector with electric stun capabilities. Some like the idea of a full-size stun baton that not only can deliver a 20 million volt shock but can be used as a club too. Those are good items to use for protection from both dogs and man too, but they will also deliver an injury, however momentary, to the attacking dog.
I have found an item that when used will stop a dog in its tracks and confuse him before he decides to attack. it is a handheld electronic device that when activated will send a very loud sound at a frequency that we can’t hear but dogs can. Secondly it uses a super bright LED strobe light to blind and confuse the dog. This is effective up to 40 feet away. This devise doesn’t physically harm the dog and never needs to come in contact with the animal. It is easily carried with you wherever you go. A very good dog deterrent for joggers, walkers, delivery and repair men. And best of all, you don’t have to shower and change clothes when you get home.
